Jury Still Out
Just used a Hypertec on my 01', 2001, 5.2, 3.55, stock + K&N -programmed for 87 octane. Pulled my boat up a relatively steep hill; not sure if I felt a difference. Went on a 70 mile trip, some highway, some cities streets. Not sure if I felt a difference (without the boat).
I do think I feel more power from a deadstop. I didn't really get on it to see how it feels over 2k. Tommorrow is another day; I will be trailering about 40 miles each way - the exact trip I did this morning. It will be interesting to see if I notice a difference. Stay tuned.

What octane gas are you using ? any pinging ? any other associated mods incl 180 themostat or 3923 plugs ? did you try to correct speedo ? result ? keep us posted.
most important question... did you catch any fish ?
i've been running mine for about a week and i'm not sure yet either. i'm stepping my way through it slowly, but so far have severe pinging unless i use 93 octane. have not done the thermostat or plugs yet... waiting to burn up more gas. it never pinged before, but i may have other problems.

I was running 87 octane and only had minimal pinging on full throttle going up hill pulling a 3500# trailer & boat with a 100 layout boat and a couple hundred pounds of duck decoys and gear. I could barely hear the pinging. I have not installed the 180 degree thermostat and am running plugs the forum may comment on... boshe 4 prongers. I plan to swap out for the colder 3923's after duck season. I did correct the speedo for my 285's.
No fish, just ducks.
I will be trailering at highway speeds tomorrow; hopefully the pinging isn't an issue.

Definitely get rid of the Bosch plugs. They don't work in these trucks at all - that goes for any "platinum" fancy a$$ plug. Save your money and get the 3923 or Champion Truck Plugs. A 180 degree stat will help quite a bit with the Hypertech. Get the stat from NAPA though - there have been some quality issues with the Hypertech t-stats.......
I have been using my programmer since June. I always run the 87 octane setting with 91 octane fuel. I probably don't need to do this, but I do it anyway, andI've never had any pinging with it. I didn't know what to expect when I used this, but I noticed this A) Better milage...According to mylittle display I went from 11.5 mpg average to 13.5 mpg average. B) Only a little more power. I have a 5.2 NO POWER AT ALL! But I noticed little things like not using quite as much throttle while going up a hill. Not kicking down a gear as often as it used to . This is probably where the increased fuel milage came from. Hope this helps.
OK, I am impressed with the hypertech. I towed the boat several hundred miles over the past few days; mostly highway. I was able to drive with O/D on with minimal shifting except for hills. My MPG went from 8 before the tuning to 12 after the tuning.
I was able to put a couple hundred miles on yesterday without the trailer and a full bed of decoys, hunting gear, two adults and two labs. Driving was 50% highway and 50% country roads. MPG was 15.5.
To put this into prospective, my truck averagedbetween 8MPG with the 4,000 pounds ofboat/stuffand 14 on the Highway (empty). My truck never got 15 MPH ever. I suspect the milage will go up with pure highway driving and an empty bed. Truth be told, MPH is a bonus, I was only looking to solve the excessive shifting issue.
My thanks to those who suggested the hypertech to me a few weeks back.

i installed the hypertech programming a couple of weeks ago, using the setting for 87 octane and i got a lot of pinging with 87 gas. so i tried to go through things one step at a time. i had no other mods.
hypertech programming running 87 octane - pinging, lack of power.
filled up w/93 octane - no pinging, good power.
used up that gas, put in 87 - pinging, lack of power.
changed plugs to autolite 3923 - no change, still pinging lack of power
used up that gas, put in 89 - no pinging, good power.
its amazing to me how much better it runs with 89. with 87 as you hit a hill and lay into the gas a little, it starts pinging and it really saps the power. i guess its firing at the wrong point in engine cycle.
180 thermostat still sitting on workbench, i'll change that next.
