Default Trans Pan?

I'm going to be servicing the trans in my 2001 Ram 4x4, but while I'm at it I thought that I would replace the factory trans pan with a deeper aftermarket aluminum pan....

What pan should I get?

Also, which trans it in my truck? 48RE??? Its a 2001 Ram Sport 4x4"Off-Road" edition.

Thanks
Troy

I went with a PML pan. I'm happy with it. Here is my post on it.

This is the one I've been thinking about from Geno's ( http://www.genosgarage.com/prodinfo....=MH-727DD-9803 )

MAG-HYTEC - DOUBLE DEEP TRANSMISSION PAN ('98-'06 DODGE)

Detailed Description

The "Double Deep" pan has all the same features as the Deep Pan: magnetic drain plug, predrilled 1/8 NPT fitting for a temperature sensor, transmission gasket, and mounting hardware. In addition, with the Double Deep pan, the inside depth of the pan is increased from 3" to 5.25", which adds (up to) another four quarts of fluid capacity to the system. The kit includes spacer hardware to relocate the transmission filter deep into the sump. For those concerned with the pan being too obtrusive, the Double Deep pan is still tucked 1/2" above the truck’s center cross-member of the frame. Fits your stock 727, 518, 47RE or 48RE automatic transmission. Geno’s Garage includes a Mopar transmission replacement filter with your purchase as well.

your trans is a 46re. that is a nice pan. i went with the mopar performance pan on mine, adds about 2 qts to yours, added like 3-4 qts in mine with the old 727 style pans that was original pre 96.

Cool, Thanks! I think that I'll go with a +2qts pan instead of the +4qts.

So which one is the better trans?

The 46 or the 48RE?

I went with the double deep pan and it was worth every penny, my tranny runs alot cooler now which cuts down on the number of oil changes it needs.

To my knowledge, there's no such thing as a 48RE, and if one exists, it's most likely for a diesel application. A 46RE is usually found in gas 4x4 applications after 1998(?) when Dodge switched over to computer controlled electronicly shifted (the "E" in the model number)trannys.

Here's a 4 qt pan thats less expensive than the 2 qtebay pan.

There is a 48RE, but, I believe they started using it in 2003. It replaced the 47RE. And yes, its used behind the diesels (and, V10s).
The 46RE is found behind the V8s, regardless of 4x2 or 4x4.
I believe they switched from RH to RE starting with the 1996 model year, but don't quote me on that.

Am I crazy, or will a 727 pan fit on my 46RE?

Sure looks like it will.....
