this is going to sound really odd...

this started a couple of weeks ago where the truck would have a hard time shifting from first to second gear when cold. i didn't think much about it at first but now it has gotten worse. i have to have the revs between 2000 and 2500 to get it to shift. once it warms up it's fine and dandy shifting like nobody's buisness.

i'm wondering if it just needs a tune up or if it is something that is worse.

it's a 2001 4x4 with i think the 46 or 47RE transmission. oh yeah and only 47k miles on it. urg.

your problem sounds like the 2nd gear shift solenoid is sticking... or your tranny pressure is not coming up quick enough. my '05 had a similar problem and the tranny pressure (shop did it) adjustment helped but my solenoid is definatly having problems...

well shoot and dern i missed ya. yeah corvallis is a nice little town. sorry to hear about the 05 having problems... that new of a vehicle shouldn't have problems.

thanks for the info. guess i'll be calling the dealer and figuring out something to do about it. if nothing else it could use some servicing anyway.

i have a 97 that does the same thing and i was low on fluid added some clean and it helped alot but all it should need is a good service like mine to get flushed and have the bands adjusted

Hey, i had an 85 ram 2500 5.9 and i had the same problem with it...i kept driveing it for about a month and a half after that started, then the tranny shot ****...I just hope my 95 dosent start that crap. Good luck buddie

You could possibly have a seal hanging in the front clutch, which is very common. Rebuild those trannies all the time[:'(]

well **** and dern... i'm picking up some fluid today after class. see if that does the trick. thanks all for the input. looks like i'll also be crawling under there looking for a leak.

I know this will sound strange, but, before you bring your truck in for service, see if you are getting any codes. Would be tranny sensor voltage. I have seen about half a dozens of my friends rams, 94-00, that had delayed/erratic shifting, and delayed tc lockup in cold weather. It was the tranny temp sensor. The sensor warps from cold and heat and the internal resistance piece in there now is improperly gapped.


A cold tranny like 25 degrees or lower will be sluggish for the first mile or so. That's normal. My truck has a new sensor and takes almost a mile of driving before lockup. A bad sensor will keep that tc from locking up even though the tranny fluid temp is warm enough for the PCM.


Just my personal experience. It is an inexpensive part, and it's super easy to install. Just remember when you unscrew the old one, HAVE A FINGER READY TO PLUG THE HOLE, and make sure the new sensor is in the other hand......LOL. And oh yeah,....wear goggles, 4 real dude.

yeah i tried to see if there were any codes and i wasn't coming up with anything so i don't "think" that it's that. but i'll definetly keep it in mind. much apprecaited all the help i can get. save me much from going to dealer.

i got some of this lucas stuff that's supposed to help the slip but i'm not sure if that's what it is either. but for a couple of bucks i'm not going to stress on it.

if you've got any other ideas i'm VERY open to suggestions.

i dont know where you are located but here in GA i can get a full service with a flusha nd all that good stuff for 140 so just price around and see if they can do it
