Look at the bright side ! With a shredded belt and a waterpump that doesn't turn, I'll bet the screaching noise has stopped! [sm=bangbang.gif]

Hi,

I am new to the site,

So I have the same A/C problem and the dealer tells me it's the bearing inside the comprssor. Says it's going to be $800 to fix it. So I asked it they can short belt it and I have not heard back yet. If they cant I will get the truck back and do it myself thanks to your past experiances. They tell me it's the inturnal bearing that has gone bad and not the one on the pully When I get it back and it is short belted how canI cheak this? Oh anddidany one find a a good aftermarket compresor?

My truckis a 98 Ram Sport 5.9it has a 180,000 plus and worth every penny I paid

Thanks for your help

Ray

You also need to check the idler pulley. Mine was making a hell of a howling noise, replaccd it and all is good with the world again. This is the pulley that has to bolt go through it and right into your water pump. Almost the center/top of the engine.

The belt won't go around the A/C compressor ... or do you mean "how can I check if it's the internal bearing"?

I know the belt will not go around the a/c pully, I am looking for a way to make sure it is the inturnal bearing, just to make sure the dealer did not make a mistake, i don't want to replace something I don't have too,

Oh the other pullies are fine I took the belt off an cheacked befor I took it in,

Thanks for your help

You'd almost need a mechanic's stethoscope to pinpoint this problem (and mind the moving parts!), but have you tried some surgically aimed squirts of wd-40 into the bearings of the various pulleys? Careful not to get it on the belt.
