Need help, low gasoline light coming on!!
I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 with the 5.2L V8. I am currently trying to sell the truck and a guy a couple of weeks ago decided to test drive it and when he did he ran the truck out of gas!! Well I brought him some gas and ever since then whenever the truck's gas gauge gets just below 1/2 tank then the low gasoline light comes on! The gauge works fine and tonight I put a few gallons into the truck and the light no longer comes on, but as soon as it hits just below 1/2 tank it will come back on. Any ideas???? Everyone I have talked too is stumped. Thanks.
I have the same problem, only my gas light comes on at slightly under a 1/4 tank, and runs out of gas when I am at an 1/8th of a tank. I know it's some type of sensor that has went bad, i'm just not sure where it's at.
I have the same problem with the fuel gauge, but I get the light when the needle really dips way past 1/4, then goes back up to the right amount. the needle just goes up and down, then the light turns off. I just use my odometer as reference to see if I need more fuel.
The problem probably lies in the "fuel level sending unit", which is attached to the fuel pump (inside the gas tank). I am lazy to check or replace it since the fuel pump is such a hassle to remove.

Well I called the local dodge dealership this morning and the technician said it was the sending unit (the float) that is attached to the fuel pump. I call the parts department and the float is $79.00 + labor.
its a bit tricky and involved to change that but if you want to save some cash, you could do the work yourself. theres plenty of threads you could search that have info about dropping the tank, whats the best way and how to change that unit.
