Where does this part go?
I just put my transmission back in my truck today and since it's been like 2 months since I took it out so I for got where a couple of things go, there is a spring that goes on the drivers side that attaches to the downshift linkage I think. There is a hole for the spring there, but I don't know where the other side of the spring attaches to. I have a 97 Ram 2500 5.9L V8 with a 46RE tranny. If someone could look for me or if you have a picture that would be great. Thanks in advance.
I think the spring could be important, but while I've often wondered how and where these extra parts turn up, it is not unusual to have 2-3 extra parts left over after most any extensive repair. Although one can ascertain with almost absolute certainty that these parts were on the vehicle before the repair, I have found more than a few times I could not figure out for the life of me where these things go.
What I usually do is test-drive the vehicle (and take it easy just in case) to see how it works. In more than a few cases, the car runs fine and I simply store the extra parts in a little box and years later I still wonder how I manage to have all these extra parts yet the vehicle runs dandy.
Obviously, if something is not the way it should be (such as improper shifting), you'll need to look further into it.
That is, if you find no concrete answer, likely your best option:
- Take it for a short and easy test drive, see what happens.
- If it runs fine, don't worry about it but do keep the parts for later as you never know.
