shudder in o/d
Looking for advice. From 0-40, (with the o/d on) the truck runs good, when the truck shifts intoo/d and the rpms drop to 1200, the truck shudders bad. When I turn the o/d off, the rpms jump up to 2-2400 and the truck has a very slight shudder, but basically runs fine. I havechanged the plugs, wires anddistributor cap. I also changed the air filter. I had the transmittion rebuilt 1-1/2 years ago. I took it back to them and two guys said it was in the engine and not the trans. My check engine light was on and diagnosed a #3misfire. After changing the plugs ect., the light is off. Any ideas would be appreciated. I have the318. Thank you for any help..............Jacob
Mine does it to occasionally, feels like the trans to me. I put some of the Lucas stuff in there and it stoped it, but I changed the fluid and haven't put it in again. Only seems to do it in winter too.
It's a '99 1500 2WD. I have 144,000 mi. I'm pretty comfortable with it not being the trans. Although I think in FL, the torque converter is not considered part of the transmission. I don't know how to check the converter though.Thanks.
If the shudder is momentarily why the torque conveter is locking up, that is normal. Because the pump and the turbine are never truly at a 1:1 ratio, when lockup occurs, you will feel a shudder. One of two things is going to happen. If you are at light throttle, the engine,(and subsuquently the tc pump and housing)will slow down to match the turbine in the converter. Or, if you are WOT, ***** to the wall, you can feel a shudder as the clutch slips while the turbine/clutch assmebly catches up to the motor.
The factory tc only has a single clutch disc. Slippage has to take place somewhere. That clutch disc is where it happens. Once the tc is locked, "theoretically" your engine and transmission are mechanically mated. The factory tc clutch can slip, and create the shudder. Any shudder will be feltthroughout the entire drive line. Especially if it has some slop in it.(Bad u joints, gear lash, transfer case slop, etc). Large tires will cause a shudder.
Now, and this is just what I have learned. The dodge factory TC can warp quite easily from high temp extremes, and high torque scenarios such as mods, chips, etc. Once the tc has warped or mushroomed, the clutch disc doesn't not make complete contact with the housing. A high spot can occur. That will give you LOTS of shudder when driving. A moderate increase in throttle can cause shudder because the clutch disc is slipping.
I hope this helps a little. If the shuddering is your TC going in and out of lockup, and not a clutch slip, then your TPS would be the next thing I would look at.
Just my 2 cents.
Good luck with your ride.
The factory tc's were only rated for 650 ft/lbs of torque. These trucks today can easily create near double that or more.
