93 Jeep Grand Cherokee ( i know i know.. wrong forum.. bear with me plz)
this is a cut and paste of what i put on the jeep forum.. any input would be awesome.. thx
Hello all i have posted in the 2nd generation ram section a few times.. but now im here.. I have a 93 Grand cherokee limited.. 5.2 automatic (duh) my problem is this.. when i got it the abs light was on.. wouldnt pass inspection.. i replaced the passenger front sensor.. it was grinded down (kinda odd) looked almost as if a rock had gotten between the sensor and the wheel teeth. Now being this is the only sensor on the wheel.. im guessing the same sensor also controls the traction control.. being this is the all wheel drive. When i turn hard to the right.. or hard to the left (like a u-turn) it will bind up. and it will hop. Im taking a stab at this but i believe its because its not sensing right from the sensor and its not letting the one tire turn slower than the other.. its keeping drive on both tires. Now after i had replaced that sensor... the abs light went off.. they seem to be working ok now. But when i start it and its cold out.. it will come on.. i let it warm up a bit. shut it off then start it again. its fine. Also.. more recently .. the transmission isnt going into overdrive like it should.. it runs like a raped ape.. strong.. great pickup. .no slip.. but at 45mph its not kicking into o/d.. its running around 2100 rpms.. if i mess with it.. i can finally get it to kick down.. but its starting to hit the nerves a bit.. any input would be great.. thanks in advance

exactly.. being it doesnt have the option to take it out if full time 4 hi to an extent.. its all wheel drive.. its got all time 4.. neutral.. and 4 low.. i keep it in all time 4.. naturally. and it still hops at sharp turns.. if i go slow.. i can feel it bind up.. ALSO.. when im driving.. hard to explain.. but i noticed it bad thanksgiving and christmas.. on the road.. i hit 70.. all is fine.. around 55 i get a vibration.. then its gone.. sounds like tires.. but when i have to slow to a crawl.. around 10-15mph.. i hear a "screech" like metal to metal? not quite sure.. but it does it with every rotation of the tire.. also if i hit the brakes.. it will stop.. i pulled off both front tires.. checked the brakes.. even took them off.. it all looks great.. no abnormal wear on the pads.. or rotors.. all looks good with the brakes.. and the sensors.. its leaving me to think something with the axle? bent? broke?
my dakota has the corporate rear in it and if i take a sharp corner i feel the backend hop. but if all the tires are hoping then there is a problem. but if it just the rear you mat have a bad axle bearing. determining which side it is is gonna cost ya, if they need to tear into the rear.
perhaps the sensor can't sense isn't getting a reading form the wheel. like the teeth and the sensor aren't on the same page. may be you just bought a bad sensor, it happens. not sure how the all whell drive works, but get all four wheels aff the ground and see if you can detect any thing. DON'T WHERE LOOSE CLOTHING AROUND THE SPINING WHEELS.
look for any scaring or scratching on the inner rim ro the caliper or even the dust cover, maybe the dust cover is bent a lil bit. look for any meatal shavings or metal dust particals.
even with all wheels on the ground you should be able to wiggle the front wheels. if the whole jeep moves and you hear or feel NO movement then the bearings are good, but if any movement or knocking noise then the bearings are bad.
do you have drive shafts on the front or a solid axle housing?
