Steering clicking noise
Developed this weird clicking noise coming from steering wheel area when the wheel is turned. Sounds like it coming from area where turn signals, e flash and ign is. Where can I get a flipping torque tool to go way up in those holes on the cover to remove the damn thing to see what is going on. Is it a T20 size ?.
Don't know what size but before you go tearing it apart, check a couple of other things. I've had a clunk for a while and have found a couple of items.
For one, my steering box has a lot of slop and has a slight knock around center.
For two, I have a Borgeson intermediate steering shaft and the set screws will losen up on you and make it noise.
And three, just found this one on Saturday, between the firewall and the steering shaft coming through, it wiggles a little. The whole setup wiggles in the whole in the firewall.

I have the same problem. WhenI am going around a cornermy truckmakes a clicking noise(its a one time noise per turn)that sounds like its coming from right behind the steering wheel. It seems tohappen more oftenthe longerI drive.
WellI did some searching on the forum and didn't find out too much. I read soemthing about a possible recall on the steering column? My noise is a definite clunking noise, that generally happens when going around a turn and it sounds like its coming from directing behind the steering wheel? Thoughts?
In the middle of a turn while driving (you're holding the wheel steady) or when you just turn the wheel?
If you're turning a corner or driving in a circle in a parking lot, you're holding the wheel steady. If it's making a clunking noise during that, you've got another problem.
If you can make the clunk when you're sitting at a stop sign and turn the wheel or during the wheel turn for turning a corner, it could be anything in all that steering linkage. I'd first grab that intermediate shaft and see if you can move it (at the top, middle, and bottom). Try to wiggle it in all different directions. You should be able to start narrowing down from there.

IF you have a 4wd check your front wheel u-joints. Sometimes the cap's will pop off of them where the bearings are and leave you with that extra space, causing clunking/clicking noises, especially when turning. All you have to do is bend down and look all the way around the u-joint, it's very obvious if any are toast. This is one of my problems. Could also be your brake pads worn down so bad they wiggle back and forth. Try pressing your brakes down while rolling/hearing the clicking noise and see if it stops?

Can any of you hear the ticking even when you aren't turning the steering wheel? Such as when you are driving down the road and your suspension flexes. My truck developed this clicking sound (sounded like it was coming from behind the dash) whenever I would drive down rough roads in particular. I tied everything up underneath the dash thinking it was a loose connection. After what seemed like months of searching it finally turned out to be the spot welds that held the firewall and the mounting bracket for the hood hinge had broken. It was a pain to fix but I drilled three holes and inserted 1/4" bolts and locknuts to prevent it from moving...no more ticking.
