Default tranny shot? no forward movment!!

great shape 97 1500 standard cab 4x4 318for 1100!!!! its a 46re and i bought it with a bad tranny, go fig! it has full power in reverse, but in drive it wont even move. is the tranny shot? need adjustment? clutches? solenoids? he said it didnt grenade it slowly just stoped going. pleas help thanks.

slim chance but i had a friend that his dad had a ram and it did the same thing it ended up being his cat clogged but on the other hand i had the same issue with an old ford and it was my trans. again slim chance but give it a look anyway

From what I understand, this is common with these trucks. Mine went out about a year ago. Seems to be a lot of that going around...

From the FSM:

NO DRIVE RANGE
(REVERSE OK)

1. Fluid Level Low.
Add fluid and check for leaks if drive is restored.

2. Gearshift Linkage/Cable Loose/Misadjusted.
Repair or replace linkage components.

3. Rear Clutch Burnt.
Remove and disassemble transmission and rear clutch and seals. Repair/replace worn or damaged parts as needed.

4. Valve Body Malfunction.
Remove and disassemble valve body. Replace assembly if any valves or bores are damaged.

5. Transmission Overrunning Clutch Broken.
Remove and disassemble transmission. Replace overrunning clutch.

6. Input Shaft Seal Rings Worn/Damaged.
Remove and disassemble transmission. Replace seal rings and any other worn or damaged parts.

7. Front Planetary Failed Broken.
Remove and repair.

I bought my 3/4 ton like that did the exact same thing. I got a rebuilt kit and a new TC for around $250 and did the job my self. The obvious problem with mine was my rear clutch was destroyed. All of the plates were severly warped and there was no material left on them. Plus the plate they all sit on was cracked in three places(not included in the rebuild kit like $20 from dodge). Did all this and the truck runs fine now.

well i tore the trammy apart and its shot, the front planitaries are gone, they stripped out on the output shaft and took the shaft out with it. oh well time to buy a new one.thanks guys.
