Default top end rebuild

I'm getting a little bit of money back on my taxes this year and I think I am gonna do a topend rebuild on my 318. With 263,xxx miles on it I'm sure she would enjoythe job as much as I would.

I'm thinking of going with hughes heads p/n hphd-mag1-sp and a cam from hughes p/n her1828al along with 1.6 roller rockers, a B&G flash and a 53mm TB. My main problem is I have never done a topend rebuild or been this deep into the engine.
I am wondering what else do I need to replace while I am in there. Any P/N and where I can get the parts would be greatly appreciated. I am probubly gonna have about $3000 dollars to do this and I am trying to stay within that budget. Any and all advice is welcomed.

Thanks in Advance

with that many miles on it... you'd be better off getting a younger motor or rebuilding that one. do a compression check on it and see how tired it is.

The last compression check was done around 220,xxx miles I don't remember the numbers but all 8 cylinders checked out.I did do some thinking on it lastnight while I was at work though and decided I would be much better off starting my 426 stroker project. From what I figure that is gonna cost me close to $10,000. She deffenitly has alot of pep left in her. A buddy of mine came by the other day with his dads 2003 4.7l rc swb 2wd ram and wanted to run them. So we did and I beat him by 2 truck lengths from a dead stop and from a roll. Granted I have quite a few mods but there has got to be over a 1000lb weight difference.
Both times we ran to about 110mph. Ohh and before everybody starts we were on a dead end road with no house, kids, or any type of traffic

With that many miles, I agree with Steve. I'd yank the whole block and redo the mains, check the crank, rods, etc and install a hi-flow oil pump. If you're going that far, spent the extra effort. That way, you eliminate surprises.

Your gonna have to pull it to replace the cam with any bit of ease. Make sure when your buying your springs valves, retainers and cam that you buy them all as a kit or you will run into problems fitting everything together, and make sure your not going to cause interference of a valve and piston or, cause coil bind of the valve springs.

just pull the fan shroud and rad, then move the a/c condensor out of the way and the cam come's out easy as pie, but it certainly is much easier with the motor out

I have been giving this alot of thought and have decided to just start my 426 build. I think my engine will last another 150,000miles while I build my 426. I may possibly go with a gear swap in the near future. I do appreciate everybody's suggestions though. Keep them comming incase I change my mind.
