Default 4x4 problem

hey all. New guy here and dumbfounded. I have a 98 Ram 4x4. The other day I put it in 4 and it was fine. I took it out and now when I put it back into 4x4 it doesnt engage or go in. I can move the lever with no problem and it feels like it is going in but it doesnt go into 4. Also now when it is in 2wd the 4x4 light comes on. I cant figure it out.
Any help?

Thanks!!!!

Sounds like it just isn't engaging all the way. Our trucks have vacuum actuated front axles, so my guess is you might have a vacuum leak that is preventing the actuator to get sufficient vacuum to fully engage. Just a guess.

Start the engine, shift to 4x4, maybe drive forward a little to make sure it's in 4. Put in park(engine still running)then pull vacuum lines off the acuator on front axle to see if there is suction on one line. The axle gets the vacuum from the t-case switch. If no vacuum at axle, try at t-case. Look over the plastic lines good for cracks or disconnections.
