Default Headlights not turning on, not sure why.

Tonight driving home I had no headlights. All the other lights including the high beams work. It is just the low beams that will not turn on. I checked all the wiring and fuses but nothing jumps out at me as being a problem. Has anyone run into this in the past? I am really stumped on this one.

Its probeither in your dash switch or the steering column. Mine was the dash switch. But no fogs or lows only highs. I also had a problem with the wiring to the lights on the drivers side under the truck. Seems when the truck twisted off road there wasnt enough slack and was streching the wires.

What year Ram?

My first guess is to check the headlamp switch behind the dash. And easy way to confirm this is to literally stick your nose up against the drivers side air vent, and see if the scent of burning plastic is present. If so, your switch has gone bad.

Some switches also have a relay in their circuit.

There also has been reports of the wiring harness plugs, seperating at the high/low turn signal switch assembly. Two cover on the underside of the cowls behind the steering wheel. Remove them and the two pieces seperate. You can see on the left side if the harness has come undone.

I would lean towards the headlamp switch, or a relay (if so equipped).

Good luck with your ride.

I had problems with my low beams not working also. After the switch checked out to be ok I startedto check the multi-function switch and when I took off the cover the purple/white wire had pulled out of the back of the plug.

The truck is a 97 - sorry about that.

Well the fix was totally f'ed up on this one. It makes no sense and I am not totally sure it is not going to happen again. However, I bought brand new headlights with matching corners a couple weeks ago on eBay. They came with new bulbs and worked fine since I put them in.

Just for the heck of it I pulled out the bulbs and put in my old ones and they worked. Then I put the new ones back in and nothing. It makes no sense because looking at the filament and the connectors I see no reason why they would not be working. They are even the same brand 9004 bulb as to what I had.

I will see what happens in the next few days but this is very strange.[/align]

Checked them before and after. I figured it was a fuse but I am getting power to the bulb so that is why I changed the bulb.

You are getting power to each side, and in both the low and high settings?

If that is the case, look for a broken ground wire.

Good luck with your ride.

I took a closer look at the bulbs just now. The leads going to the low beam on both have burn spots in them. That must be why they went out. It will be interesting to see how long the other bulbs last.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the site, but this same problem happened to me last night! My '97 Sport 1500 (5.9 liter) has 226K miles, and for the most part, everything runs great!

However, as I said, last night, driving home, it seemed as though half way home, my lights weren't on. I tried turning them on and off, and got nothing. I put the hazzards on and carefully drive home.

This morning, I checked out this site and found this thread. I went out, turned on the headlights (no go) then tried the brights. Sure enough, those worked. Then, I turned off the brights, and the low beams worked again! Go figure.

Any ideas? Does this still sound like a switch? How difficult is this sort of thing to replace? I'm not the most mechanically inclined person, but if I can do it with a basic set of tools, I think I can get it. Any help will be appreciated! Thanks
