transfer case questions
My np 231went out on meI think the chain was slipping...so I bought a np 231 HD that was used and did not have many miles on it...the guy guaranted that it worked also....I had tochange some things aroud to make the switch work...my truck is a 98 and i think this transfer case came out of a 01...the sensor on that transfer case had an electrical plug in...so i put my vacume one in since it seemed to be the same sensor just different hookup...the yolk on the new one had just a normal yolk and mine has what looks likea two universal velocity ball setup so i swiched those so my driveshaft would work...once i got this put in i noticed that the gears seem to be backwards...the transfer case I have in it now goes from 2H-4H-N-4L from up to down...and my old one went from 4L-N-2H-4H..Is this right or is something wrong
Well after I got the transfer case in and the linkage adjusted half way decent the 4x4 still does not work...the front shaft barely turns in 4H and does not turn the wheels and doesnt turn at all in 4L
Any body have any suggestions? I noticed that the part time 4x4 light comes on correctly when the gear is in 4x4

RE: transfer case questions
chopper1 is yours the original transfer case? im assuming that my shift pattern is right since yours is like that..
Im sure the new one is a HD..the plate reads 231 D HD ...my old one read 231 D
I also forgot to mention that sometimes there is a grinding sound...not a really bad one just sounds like it is going in gear all the way or somethin...do I need to fool with the linkage some more or do you guys think it is something worse?

RE: transfer case questions
my transfer case pattern is 4L-N-2H-4H front of truck to back. also i haven't quite figured out how to shift it smoothly from 4x4 back to 4x2. when i shift back to 2 high from 4 high it sits there for a second revving with the pedal push and then jerks into a gear sometimes it take a hundred or so yards to do this. is there something i'm supposed to do shifting back like throwing the tranny in neutral or something?

RE: transfer case questions
sorry for the late post...umm no you should not have to do anything special...i believe you are able to go in and out of 4h and 2h any speed under 55mph....i wouldnt try it too fast though....maybe check you fluid or change it...your linkage could also be a problem but doubtful since the shifter in the truck doesnt have gears it just kinda pivots...never know for sure though might try and adjusting it up or down the rod a little
