TRANNY ?
Ok guys. I had some shifting problems a few weeks ago and changed the filter and fluids and didnt notice any metal/sludge in the pan. Tranny would get hung in whatever gear I was in randomly. I took to dealership and they replaced trans governor solenoid and a transducer in tranny. Well $500 later I left the dealership and less than 2 miles down the road it started getting stuck in gears. I barely got it home and when I got in the driveway I had no power to the tranny. Now when I put it in gear it wont move forward or reverse! It will roll on a slope but no power. Almost like the tranny is not there or disconnected. Any thoughts? Truck is 98 5.9 103000 on it. What does it sound like?

Sorry Forgot to mention the dealership is otowing back from my house and are going to look into it again. But what does the symptoms sound like. Could the torque convertor be gone? would that cause it?
$1500is in the ballpark for a rebuild. One thought though, you might be better off taking it to a private garage and have them rebuild it with after-market parts. There are some tolerance issues with the seals that cause shifting problems. If you have the dealership rebuild it, they will put the same faulty, factory Dodge parts back in. Some of the after-market suppliers have figured out what is wrong with the design of the original parts and have improved them.
A friend of mine operates his own transmission shop and was telling me about this just this weekend. He uses Superior as a supplier for many of transmissions, although I can't say that is what he puts into our truck transmissions. Just a thought, but it might be worth calling around and questioning some of the other garages to get an estimate and find out what parts they use.

I'm considering buying a 98 and the current owner is saying that the governor solenoid is what is being shown as the code. I am waiting to find out the exact code, but from everything i have found searching other forums it sounds like the same problem. Can it be just replacing the solenoid & transducer? What all is involved in replacing these and are these dealer only items? I can't seem to find them on Autozone or Partsamerica web sites. I'm hoping that the problem isn't the transmission like yours sounds.
Thanks and sorry for the hijack.

Here's another thought.A Dodge dealer serv mgr friend told me that the extra for a new Dodge tranny is worth it if you plan to keep it. While dealers usually don't update and correct when rebuilding, Dodge does correct the design for new trannies over the years. I bought a brand new tranny for a '95 van in '03 - was same used for '03's. With friendly discount, it cost me $2500 - prolly cost more now and a RAM tranny more still. So - it's just a thought.
