I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4

I'm new to this forum. At 50,000 miles when I took my truck in for rear diff service, the dealer informed me that my ring & pinion were bad and metal shavings were there. The dealer replaced both.

Now, at 80,000 miles, I was hearing a whining noise and took it back to the dealer. They are telling me that my bearing(s) are bad and that I might need a new ring and pinion assembly.

Why is this happening? Should Dodge have checked out my bearings at the 50,000 mile repair? Is this problem because of the mechanic's neglect?

Ask them if the fluid level was correct, and if there was anything contaminating it...
If the vent hose isnt routed correctly water can get in there and mix with the oil making the lubeing ability go way down...

The bearings are adjustabe in the rear end, along with a slight adjustment ability for gear lash...

Make sure that the bearings just arnt out of adjustment.

 

If the bearings are out of adjustment, what will the truck act like? Noise, popping sound???

 

Worn bearing can give you a high pitched whining (pinion) or a rumble (carrier bearings)
Are they offering any warranty on the repair?

It's possible a bearing failed due to mfg defect, but more likely it wasn't installed properly. misaligned gears too much preload or not cleaning out the old debris can accelerate the wear and failure.

 

dont take it to a stealership, take it to a mechanic you know and trust and have him look at it
