Have to shift manually to make it shift
I did a search and found only one posting on this problem. There was no followup to whether the poster's problem was fixed or not by the replier's response.
I have a 99 Dodge Ram1500 with a 360 cid engine. The problem is that the transmission sometimes won't shift from 1stto 2nd when the selector lever is in DRIVE. If I manually shift to 2nd then back intoDRIVE it will shift on it's own.
Here's is what happening: Start from a stop, transmission engages normally, transmission doesn't shift, engine RPM will keep climbing, at or about 3000 RPM, I manually shiftfrom DRIVE to 2nd andthen back to DRIVE. Thetransmission then shifts normally through all the gears to OVERDRIVE.
If I start out with a light foot on the gas, it shifts normally through all the gears to OD.
Sometimes whenpulling up a hill the transmission will down shift, but won't shift back to DRIVE until I manually shift like before. (Sometimes it will shift normally)
Sometimes when driving down the road the transmission shifts into NUETRAL, I will manually shift to 2nd and then back to DRIVE and the transmission then shifts normally.
I have recently installed a new torgue converter (stock) over$379.00 in December. [&o]
Of course the Transmission Shop I talked to automatically stated that I needed a $1800 overhaul. It's the same shop that told me I just needed a new torque convertor too.

Transmission only fails to shift on it own SOMETIMES, not every time. SOMETIMES when driving at normal speedsit shifts to a lower gear and then I have to manually shift back to 2nd and then into DRIVE. After doing this it shifts into DRIVE.

My transmission did the same thing for a while. Then it began to slip. Then I had to manually shift or it would only run in 4th. Finally I limped home one day at 10 mph, which took 4000 rpm. And all said and done, the rebuild cost $2,472. Get it fixed now while it`s still cheaper.
Since your problem varies with throttle pressure (and it sometimes kicks down while cruising), try a TV cable adjustment and then maybe a band adjustment.
Found the problem today,
Governor Screen was clogged. I had replaced the Torque Converter due to wear on the lock up clutch. The old debry from the clutch material was in the fluid. It clogged the screen.
Cleaned screen, new filter, new fluid....... works good as new.
