Default truck problems....in need of help please!

ok so i installed an aftermarket tach the other day and it will not cooperate with me...i connected it correctly as the directions say and i cant get it to work properly...i connected it to the igniton coil like it claims to do so...yet when im driving it seems like its missing from like 1700-2700 rpm wise...any idea...cause when im in park...it free flows all the way to redline...im drawing blanks...should i try connecting it to the distributor? would that help cause the problems to go away? please help im in need of it right now

I thought most of them say to connect it to the distributor, but maybe not. You might need an adapter type thing to get it to work. I remember reading something that certian tachs/ignition systems work for certian years and all the other years need to buy another adapter thing.

Just a guess but is there a switch for number of cylinders you have on it?
I have seen tachs that you had to select 4,6, or 8 cylinders for their accuracy...
