Default v10 auto vs. manual

I have been doing a lot of reading and I think the v10 is the way to go for me I will be driving it probably less than 3,000 miles a year and at most I shouldn't be pulling more than 10,000 pounds. I have done some reading on the motor and most people say that it is a pretty reliable engine. The only thing that I have read is that the back 2 cylinder's piston rings wear out. Is this a common occurance or can it be prevented? I am also torn between an auto or a manual. The auto is a 47RE which is supposed to be more reliable and as long as you keep up the maintainance and keep the tranny cool it should last, but there is also the manual NV4500 which is much more reliable, but I heard the company went out of business so parts are harder to find and expensive if you ever do have a problem. Which would you guys recommend?

if i were you.. i'd get a diesel.. even a 94 12 valve diesel will have wayyy more power then a v10 plus almost double the mpg

also.. manuals would last longer then a auto would especially hauling things.. but then again having a auto would make your life easier then shifting all the damn time.. trust me im tired of it

Yeah I would not mind a diesel, but I want a 99+ with the quad doors and I don't have that much money to drop into a diesel. For the amount I am actually going to be driving it I can't really justify it. I might pull 10k like 3 or 4 times or only when I move.

The truck you have now will probably do it just fine. at least if it's only a few times.

Yeah when I do move it will have 10,000 lbs behind it plus 2 motorcycles in the bed and I'll be pulling that across the country and it has a rack of miles on it.

NVG (New Venture Gear) was a joint venture between Chrysler and GM. You can still get parts for any New Process (Old school Chrysler/Dodge) or NVG tranny. The 4500 was a good transmission, and with it you got a hybrid Dana 80 in the V10 trucks, kind of an oddball axle.

What do you mean it was an oddball axle? Was it a good axle? What kind of ratio was available? Sorry about all of the questions, but I am in the market for a v10 and I want to make sure I get the right one.

Yeah, I'm wondering what ya mean about the Dana 80 myself? Hybrid of what? Is it a beefier Dana 70 or something? I wonder cuz I've got the 80 and the 4500 in mine, and I love it. Kind of alot of shifting in town, I always start off in 2nd gear too, 1st is a granny low that'll squawk 'em every time if ya don't have a load to pull. Anyway, always did wonder what the deal was with the Dana 80, so any info or links would be great.

It's a Dana80 with Dana 70HD axles, both 35 spline, bothheavy duty1 ton stuff, just something to keep in mind if you are looking for a locker or something.
