Default 4x4 mileage

My son has a 2001 1500 with the 5.9. On snowy days he runs in 4 wheel drive & seems to get the same mileage as when he's running in 2WD (about 12). Is that typical to get the same mileage in 2WD or 4WD?

i really dont think it'll effect the mileage that much.. actually it might get better because the front axle would help pull the truck along besides your truck trying to push it along? i dont know.. i never have it engaged on the highway anyway

there will be a minor difference in fuel consumption between 2 and4 wheel drive, 4wd sucking more gas because it takes slightly more power to spin the front ds. its not a full time 4wd system though, so dont get too used to driving in 4wd all the time
