Default Question about PCM relearning and programmers

All of my info is on my sig....I have been noticing lately that about every 200 miles I have to "reset" the pcm and it runs awesome and then over the next 200 miles it starts to get bad again, as in when letting off the gas it dies, doesn't seem like I have power, etc.untilI "reset" it again and then everything is fine. I have read that the PCM relearns itself after 200 or so miles. So...
[ol][*]Will buying a programmer fix this or is my PCM going bad?[*]Which is "better" a programmer or a new PCM? ( I am not sure I will do many more upgrades)[*]Which PCM or Programmer (which everone you choose from question #2)is the best? (I know this has been talked about a lot but since I have other questions I threw this one in also)[/ol]
Actually I read more and the Hyper Tech III is what I would go with for a programmer. You guys are always helpful and I greatly appreciate it. Thanks for all you input.

it sounds like a bad sensor feeding the pcm incorrect info. my opinion is its not the pcm. consider IAC, TPS, O2. a new tps made my truck act like a new one. there is also a minor tps adjustment process to try and get the base voltage to .7 a new iac fixed my surgeing/dying idle.

I have replaced the IAC and the voltage to the TPS is .7. Can the TPS still be bad?

When you reset the PCM, it increases fuel and makes the truck run rich until it can gather sufficient input from the various sensors to trim the system the way it thinks it needs to. So if it runs good when it is overly rich, sounds like you might be running lean after the PCM adjusts. I'd look at injector cleaning and O2 sensors.

So would running lean make it die when letting off the gas also?

Is there a way to check an O2 sensor with a volt meter? Like you do with the TPS.

How would anyone suggest cleaning injectors? Just buy the stuff off the shelf or is there another way?

How O2 sensors work and how to test them: http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/ecms...O2sensors.html
Hmmm ... didn't know you had to keep the OUTSIDE of them clean. [:@]

To clean the fuel system ... get some GOOD injector cleaner (something with Techron maybe) and use it at no less than double the concentration called for (if it says add the bottle to 20 gallons of gas ... add it to 10 gallons or so) ... or add 2 bottles to 20 gallons.

good question. maybe, but probably not. certainly not for just a minor lean condition.

hopefully somebody else will kick in an idea. if not, you've got a few choices.
1. randomly replace sensors hoping for a fix. this will eventually get expensive. if you do this, replace the ones that normally need replacing first like you have already done. tps, iac, o2.
2. take it somewhere, such as a dealer, and let them diagnose it and fix it. this could also be expensive. i don't think i've ever gotten anything fixed for less than $300. maybe i'm just unlucky.
3. take it to a dealer for diagnosis only. They SHOULD be able to hook it up to their computers and identify what is MOST LIKELY wrong for about 1/2 to 1 hour labor.

TPSDODGE, are you out there ? got any suggestions ?

Default RE: Question about PCM relearning

speaking of relearning, and i dont mean to hijack the thread but didnt wanna start a new topic...

I programmed my truck with hte hypertech III programmer. I then had a DTC for O2 sensor bank 1 sensor 1.....I replaced the sensor and cleared the DTC with my hypertech programmer. It is my understanding that while a DTC is active, the truck will NOT use the hypertech programming. After I cleared the DTC and fixed the O2 sensor, it acts like it's still not using the hypertech programming. will i need to reprogram it?
