What type of oil do you use?
ORIGINAL: White Ram
Consumer Reports did a very intensive study, probably 7 years ago, on oil, using NYC taxi cabs. Their conclusion - no oil was better than any other, even the expensive synthetics. Their recommendation - buy what's on sale. They also saw no advantage to changing oil at 3K vs. 5K.

royal purple 10-w30... with napa gold filters..
as for that hp increase.. i wouldn't have believed it if i hadn't seen them do it on the show. course it could be "magic" but i'm more inclined to believe it. but you have to remember the vehicle, and they also did the transmission, and also the diff oils.
so between all those places i'm not too surprised that they found a better way to lubricate the gears and reduce the parasitic friction losses in there.
using synthetic over dino is really up to you. i've heard sometimes older engines don't like the synthetic as it will leak through the seals (smaller particles), but then again it does have some good qualities for those same high mile engines. i don't know for sure as i've just hit the 50,000 mile mark with my 01.
putting the royal purple oil in did seem to have a small effect on the upper end, but i wouldn't say all that much. you'll probably find more horsepower and torque by replacing the transmission fluid than you will by doing the engine oil.

I am running on Mobil 1 10w30 full synthetic right now. I am switching over to Mobil 1 10w30 Durablend as soon as I install my rockers. I cant see spending $60 for an oil change. I also run Mobil 1 extended protection oil filters.

I know of two instances where Fram filters came apart or split and fried a motor. I also used them for a long time myself with no issues. After I read that test I decided that the guys who did it know a whole lot more than I do and it was no problem to change brands to one that rated better in their test. So - I switched. I switched to synthetic oil about 30k miles ago and noticed a difference right away. The motor just runs better and smoother. Hard to describe - you guys that have owned and worked on your trucks for a long time know what I mean - It just runs better!
I figure for 10 minutes of my time every 6 or 7 weeks and the same money it would cost to go to whatever lube store and not get good stuff - I'll take care of my truck myself.....
yea i always change my own oil matter of fact i did it today castrol gtx and a fram filter only because there was a sale it was only 11.99 but next time im prolly gonna use gtx with the purolator filter
I bought some oil for my truck today and got 5quarts of Royal Purple with a can of brake cleaner which I think was $2.39 and my total came to around $41. I then bought a Pure One filter and that was I think around $6. I like the RP oil and use it in everything other than my Chevy and I would have used it in that but they were sold out of the kind I needed so I got Mobil 1 which was only $1 cheaper per quart. I'm kind of getting tired of spending $45 on a oil change though and thinking about going back to regular oil in my older Honda atleast and maybe the truck too. It's getting too expensive but I do like the RP oil
