oops, i wrote it backwards, fixed.
so i'm wrapping up my plenum repair and its all nice and clean and i'm looking at how the pcv valve is sucking oily air out of the drivers side valve cover and putting it in my nice clean intake and how an equal amount of air must be drawn out of the ibreather and piped through the passenger side valve cover and figured why not just cap these off and put in a simple breather in both valve covers. no emissions testing to worry about. any reason not to ?
something simple like this.

Record Breaker
You still need to suck the fuel/air mixture that by-passes the rings out of the crackcase ... explosive mixture ... y'know? Prior to PCV valves, they just used a road-draft tube ... hung under the car and vented the gasses out the under side. You can get away with replacing one side but leave the PCV valve in ... the check ball keeps you from blowing a hole in the side of your block should you backfire through the TB.

ok, thats a pretty good reason. here's a good article that also mentions water vapor and sludge.ORIGINAL: TMS Bill

cleaned and put pcv back in drivers side valve cover connected to intake. left simple stand-alone valve cover breather on passenger side. that elimates one hose of clutter, and gets me ready for silver's round air filter mod.
Record Breaker
You can also put a filter in line between the pcv valve and the manifold.Air compressor filters and the neccessary fittings can be picked up pretty cheap at Lowes/Home Depot.
Record Breaker
Why would you want to add a filter to the PCV system? All the "air" coming from it should have already been filtered ... either by the air cleaner or by the breather element in the other valve cover. Whats being delivered to the manifold is filtered air, gas blow-by and oil vapor ... to be burned.

Doing away with the PCV system and putting in a breather like a race engine means you also need to change the oil as often as a racing engine gets its oil changed.
The main thing the PCV system does in a good way is to remove water that condenses inside the engine block as it cools down. The water comes in un-avoidably as steam with the 'blowby' gases past the piston rings. There is a lot more water than you would think, even on a new engine.
If you want to eliminate oil droplets (a good idea)
from being injected into the intake manifold where
they will make the engine more prone to detonate
or build up carbon deposits on the piston crown
and combustion chamber roof,
install a 'catch can' in the PCV system

Rookie
There is NO reason not to run a PCV valve, even on a "race" engine. PCV stands for positive crankcase ventilation, and it is not an emissions device as many people think it is. If you run without a PCV you are asking for just BEGGING for oil leaks.
