to be safe remove the positive first make sure you dont let your wrench hit a ground..... and one you put it on connect the ground first
Thanks, I feel like a dumbass when I have to ask questions like that but it's somewhat less painful than electrocution

ALWAYS remove the negative battery cable first. Then you don't have to worry about welding your wrench to the first metal object you hit while taking off the positive side.

My truck is sluggish to start too. It does the exact same thing yours does. I've given my truck a tune up and cleaned the battery terminals. I also had a new fuel pump put on about two months ago. Pretty soon I'm going to get my starter tested to see if that's the problem.

When mine started doing that, I could let off the key and try again and it would fire right up. It did that for about 6 months before it quit. Went to go to work and had a hard time starting, coughing and stumbling then ran and went to work. The next morning it barely started and went straight to get it fixed. It ended up being the fuel pump.

i have been told not saying its true that doing it that way could hurt the battery i dont see how but i dont know for sure i was just saying what i heard but you way makes sense bc that spark is always scary!
