Default Ball Joint Brakes

What happens when one or two ball joints go bad on a 4x? Would it cause the knuckle to move enough to put brake pad pressure on the rotor? I STILL have a brake issue that I can't source and I think this may be it. If the upper driver's side is going bad, would it feel weird on hard turns, cause knock noise, cause the brake to drag on that side? - thanks

Well, the shop says it is ball joints... along with a bad track bar and a shot bearing in the steering column. More money. *sigh*

OK, ball joints, track bar and steering column replaced. It feels a lot tighter, no knocking noise over bumps and jot so much wander. There is STILL the brake dragging though. Took it back and a different guy looked at it. Got it to repeat it. They are convinced it's something with the brakes.Crud pads or need brake quiet on them. So... tonight I put on new pads and used a lot of the brake quiet stuff and more grease and sanded the glides. I test drove it and it didn't do it but we'll see for sure over the next couple days. It just might be cause the moving pads that were on there only had one retaining spring that goes inside the piston instead of two. Hoping, crossing fingers, praying...

Where did you get brake quiet? I need some of that as all my pads I've tried squeek. Even the OEM ones I just put on it still squeek. It annoys the heck out of me.

CSK Auto. It's an orange goop that goes on the back of your pads.
So here's the deal, I put on my new pads and the brake quiet and no noise, no vibration, no dragging feeling. The difference? The DuraKrap pads that I had on there. The inside pad has only one narrow spring to hold it into the caliper piston. The Raybestos, has two (one up one down) and they are twice as wide. Some goop, decent pads, 100s of dollars in replacing other parts and it's finally done with. *sigh*

Do the ball joints yourself, you save so much money. I am a college student right now, and doing all the work myself, keeps me from not running out of money. The only time getting work done at a shop is good is if your either friends with the mechanic or know a lot about cars, if you don't you get ripped off big time. I laugh at some of my brothers friends, who don't know much at all about cars, when they tell me how much they paid to get work done.

I don't know if it's worth $600 in labor but ball joints are a pita. We used to have to do them quite often on trucks at the shop I used to work at and I'd much rather just pay someone to do them as they are a major pita but I don't know if I'd pay $600 to have them done or not.

Obviously the 2500 ball joints are more expensive. I paid 250 bucks or so for all four from a Napa parts store. The shop quoted me 450 in parts, and 400 in labor to do the 4 ball joints. Did them myself, they are a pita, but can be done with the right tools.
Hub puller, slide hammer
Ball joint press
