help!! V10 rough idle?
Hi there, I just recently bought a 95 ram 3500 V10 with 61000kms on it. the truck seemed mint when i bought it (2 weeks ago) but the second day i had it i noticed when i started it the truck would idle a bit rough for a while and then it seemed to clear up a bit.
I put dual exhaust on it and a new air filter, trying to get some better fuel milage out of her, now i notice that it's got a real bad miss in the second cylinder from the front on the passenger side bank. we check it and spark seems good.
fast forward to yesterday, i took it in to the local dodge dealership for diagnostics, they say it's the coil packs failing and that when the mechanic opens the gap in the plug it hardly fires at all.
they say it's going to cost me $355 for the parts, plus an hour of shop labor.
i'm no slouch when it comes to mechanics and replacing the coil packs looks as simple as unbolting them, unplugging them, and putting the new ones on.
here's my question, or questions rather. Does anyone here have experience with their coil packs failing? does the rough idle/misfire become less noticable after the engine has warmed up when the coil packs fail? do you know if there is such thing as an aftermarket set of coil packs for this engine? (i'd get a mallory hyfire or msd or something performance oriented before i'd shell out 400 bucks for a stock piece that fails in under 100k kms..)
thanks in advance

Is it the 6 pack or 4? I'd pick up a pair on http://car-part.com/for cheap, or pricenew ACDelco coil packsat O'reillys.
i bit the bullet and bought them from chrysler. I called everywhere local and they were all more expensive, but still $400!! ugh!
i needed them right away since it's a work truck. i'm going to install them tonight and see if they work or not. i also read something on here i think about plug wires #7 and #5 touching causing a misfire? i'll have to search more for sure because i looked in the tray and the #7 and #5 wires are right next to each other on top of that tray that runs around the front of the engine.
here's a pic for views or something
Before modifications to work deck & cabinets

And how it sits now. (i plan to paint the entire deck & cabinets black asap)

some goomba at the mopar factory put the coil pack for a 97 v10 in the box marked for the 95 v10!!!
ARRRGH!!
i got the 6 pack on, but i have to wait until wednesday to get the 4 pack.
the miss was on cyl 4 anyway which is in the 6 pack so hopefully this will fix the problem, otherwise i'm miffed.
i still can't find the writeup on which plug wire routes should be changed. i vaguely remember something about 5 & 7 not touching, but i don't recall exactly the route to change them to.

update: i drove the truck 250kms yesterday, brought it home and parked it outside overnight.
current temp = -2.8c (27F)
the truck will not start, it just cranks and cranks and cranks and cranks, the starter is fine (i'm afraid if i sit there and spin it for too long i'll be buying a new starter though, or a new battery at very least) but it will not fire.
the misfire is in the #4 cylinder still, the coil pack didn't fix the problem.
I'm at a loss..
