Oil Pressure and CEL
Hey everyone... first of all i wanted to say just how great of a forum this is.... My god the wealth of info is amazing. My problem however is that yesterday i was going up a fairly steep drivway in my 99 dodge ram 1500 4x4 w/ 5.9 mag and about half way up the check gages light came on and i looked at my engine oil and it was completly down to 0 (ZERO). Well i went to but it in drive and it went back up so i continued on. Well i went down the driveway about 20 mins later and walla the same dang gum thing happened So i had to pull someone up this drive way and it didnt happen but on the way down it did. So after i was finished helping i started to head home about 30 miles away and about 10 miles later my CEL comes on. And as i start to come to a stop the Oil light comes on. So at this point im like what the hell is happening; this is a new truck for me as of three weeks ago. I shut it off and start it again CEL is still on but oil is fine so it seems. so i continue towards home. Well the oil thing doesnt happen again till about five miles out. And there are about 10 stop signs from there on; at everyone of them the oil dropped down to zero. Once i get it home i let it set overnight and i went out this morning and checked the oil. Absolutley nothing on the dipstick. But the weird thing is i checked it last week and there was plenty in there. I havent seen any oil spots at all oir any leaks. Any ideas guys and gals?
One other thing i was trying to change my PCV valve this morning and the dman thing will not come out. Any ideas on that one. Shout it be that hard?

welcome to df. fill out your signature in 'my profile' and you won't have to list your equipment all the time.
first and most quickly you need to fill it up with oil and keep it full. check it every day if necessary. oil is still cheap compared to engine rebuild.
if you have no leaks then you are burning it, and the most common oil sucking problem is a blown out plenum gasket. do a search on that for about a million posts. it will cause a vacuum to be pulled through the crankcase, and you can probably feel it if you do this. [blockquote]with pcv in place (drivers side for me) remove the breather end of the hose from the opposite side valve cover (passenger side for me). then feel that breather hose. it should be pulling a vac from the pcv side. now unplug and cap the manifold end of the pcv hose. this eliminates the source of the vacuum. if your opposite side hose is still pulling a vac, then the plenum is sucking air from the crankcase and thats where your oil is going. its a very common problem. the best solution is the hughes plenum kits.
another test is to look down in the manifold, best if you remove tb. if you see oil puddled in there, thats bad. its not supposed to be in there
[/blockquote]the pcv valve is stuck in that rubber grommet which turns very hard from age and heat. squirt a bunch of wd40 around the rubber to try and loosen it up. i had to pry out my whole rubber grommet with a screwdriver and then soak it in oil. my vent side elbow was so brittle it just broke off as soon as i pulled on it a little, so don't pull hard on it.
