I located some options to replace the OEM 46re transmission in my 01 Ram, but I'd like to see if anybody has any up to date recommendations for or against any performance remanufacturers.

Here is who I have found so far:
[ol][*]Dan Arkand - Currently running very slow due to current business . Won't fit in my timeline.[*]Rhino Engines and Transmissions [*]http://www.tciauto.com/[*]http://www.dreviltransmissions.com/46RE.htm pure-evil[/ol]
Just trying to keep the price including $400 install with minimum 12 month warranty below $3000.

I pull a 8000lb fifth wheel so a OEM spec tranny is not an option.

Any help is appreciated.

RE: Need Performance Transmission options
If I may mention a couple of other things too that I considered when I upgraded my tranny.

I have a 95' CTD, which had the factory tc go bad because I am putting the power to it.

A heavy duty tc with all the right guts will instantly give you better performance in both fluid drive, and lockup. A multi disk lockup clutch, with any kind of "tab" engagement, also makes the mechanical connection 100%. A factory tc will slip without any engine mods. Slippage is heat, heat kills fluid, fluid kills tranny. It's that simple.

Again, these are just my opinions, nothing else.

Your tranny, believe it or not, is actually pretty tough from the factory. With proper maintainence, and fluid changes that correspond with how heavy the tranny's work load is, a factory tranny could last quite some time. If you run a tranny at 200+ degrees every day of the week, you would want very frequent fluid changes. Maybe only 2500 miles or so. (That's just a number I yanked out of the sky. Sh*t varies, obviously).

Things that make a tranny tough are clutch packs, bearings, and a high pressure pump. Of course upgraded seals, rings, gaskets, would all be used in reassembly. You would add kevlar bands as well for a liftime of endurance. Factory plantaries are f*%kin rugged. You may decide to keep yours. They will work fine.

Larger tranny panis a must. The more fluid you add to the entire system, the longer it takes for it to heat up. More fluid is what can keep a tranny cooler under heavy loads. The theory is there is so much fluid moving thru the system, that it takes longer to come back around again, which means it can disipate heat in two places, the cooler, and a quality, finned, deep tranny pan. It's a cycle that works. As long as you don't baha and tetter totter over rocks, you can add a pan that hold an extra 3 gallons of fluid. That's the ultimate! If you fluid never exceeded 175 degrees, I would go 30,000 miles without even considering a fluid change.

Our beloved Mayfair is installing one on his Ram, if he hasn't already. He better have some pics and a write up...lol

A shift kit, and a torque converter lockup controller give all these new parts, the ability to have their ***** worked off without quittin. You have a tranny properly built, and never let the fluid burn, your set for 250,000 miles..............................

250,000 miles of towing an 8000lb trailer.

Once you get that tc locked up, the fluid does no work that produces high heat. All it does is circulate. What a life, huh?.lol.

It all depends on how much you wanna spend. I bought an ATS stage 4 tranny. They are pricey, but you just can't imagine how I drive my truck. Leadfoot, once she is warmed up..lol.

One other thing to look for, and Dodge just baffles me on this item...... Find a tranny builder who will drill the valve body so that fluid can circulate in park. Why our Rams don't circulate in park is beyond me. Maybe the newer ones do, who knows?

Anyway, I ramble too much, and I apologize. You caught me on a day where I thought my info might be useful. That's my intent anyway, and not much else.LOL.

Good luck with your ride.

Decided to go with the Pure Evil version of 46re from dreviltransmissions. 4 extra quarts in the deep pan, HD torque converter, new HD transmission cooler, and external auxiliary spin on tranny filter. I'll take some pics before and after it is installed. Having a cousin do it in his shop.

How can I tell what transmission I have. I have a 98 1500 4x4 Sport with the 5.9. I looked at the sticker under the hood and all it says is it's a standard 4 speed.

It's either the 46re or 46rh. Somebody with more experience than I will have to tell you which it is as somewhere Dodge changed from the H to the E.
