Thought I would write to one of these sellers who are offering the "chip" for our trucks, heres the item:

So, I write and ask how it affects shift points, where to install it, and asking what gains I can expect with my 4.7 having a cold air intake, superchips and dual exhaust. This was the reply:

yes, we have a model that works with your 2005 4.7L Dakota.

If you are using superchips, that is a custom chip to work with the superchip setting. The cost for the SC model is 49.95$ the same as our other diesel, turbo and chipped models. If you want to take off your superchip, you can run the normal programming.

are you looking for pure mpg, pure power or a little mix of both. Different programming will have different HP and MPG gains.

sometimes our customers want all power or all mpg so we have special order chips to accommodate their request and better serve their needs.

The install is on the ats or maf sensor depending on the vehicle. Ignition timing does not have anything to do with shifting however the outside intake air temp will change load on the engine which effects shift points.
