Cool 2007 3.7L six speed Towing capabilities

Unbelieveable------rated at 4100lbs towing 8500lbs gvw, I am at the limits with a Travel Trailer 3400 dry. I weigh in at 8700lbs. gvw loaded to go camping (Truck and trailer)

This truck is amazing-----3 mountain passes and only one spot did I slow to under 40 mph. The six gears are almost perfectly spaced.

I passed some pretty big RV combos on those hills.

The same Dakota with an automatic is rated to pull more, and this confuses me-----anyone have any insight?

I was told the auto version was rated to tow more because of the wear and tear on the clutch.

They want to reduce warranty claims from driver abuse.

I've pulled 5900 lbs with mine and it was pretty easy.

Default Pushing the envelope

I have been thinking of a slightly heavier trailer, if the clutch is the concern, there is no safety reason-----weight handling, stopping----

I would only be punished by having to pay for a new clutch.

the brakes are the same the suspension is the same. I've replaced most of the parts over the years and the part numbers are the same. just make sure you have trailer brakes and a good hitch, I would never suggest pulling as much as i did without a stronger hitch than the OEM. The Getrag 238 is the same trans they use in the 6spd rams. If I can beat the hell out of mine like I do everyday It must be tough. I would suggest changing the fluid regularly, also be careful of the clutch pedal, The master cylinder is plastic and I have broken one by pressing the clutch pedal too hard in a panic stop.

Jim,

I do not have both of the vehicle's specifications so it's hard to say why the automatic can pull more. However, if you'd like to review more technical information and towing inquiries, check out the link I've posted below.

I think this may be helpful.
