Enabling Dayime running lights (DRL)
OK let me some this up. The Laramie can be ordered with the TRX & TRX-4 package. The Laramie comes standard with the auto headlight system only, optional on SLT. TRX packages doesn’t include auto headlight in any of the two TRX packages. You do not have DRL by covering the IR light sensor on the dash because DRL is the high beams on in a dimming condition by using a PWC or(pulse width circuit). This circuit is controlled by the CAN using the appropriate module. The dimming PWC is the same type used in most of today's house incandescent dimmers. It turns the lamps on and off so many thousands oftimes a second. The more off the more it dims. I never got a price to do it since it didn't mater to me enough to spend money on the module. Also the Jeep Commander and some other DCX vehicles have some light setting built into the overheadconsole like DRL on or off and headlights on with wipers. I rented one in Cali and was surprised by the CAN setting available to the user from the OHC panel.
Antjmar, if you find a price, please post. I'm just curious.
I nearly always run with my lights on. Safer that way, plus it's illegal in constructions zones to run w/out lights, and when wipers are on. Being that it's construction season (the season between spring and fall), construction zones are everywhere.

I sent emails to two different parts depts. asking them what part(s) I need and cost. Ill post when (and if) they reply. I bet its going to be expensive!!!

A DRL uses the brights, but at REDUCED wattage to make them dimmer than your normal headlights. If you notice some cars at dusk (Saturns are notorious for this) their lights are really annoying - it's because I think when the moron with DRLs in those cars turns on only his parking lights, the brights go from dimmed to full power.
Anyway... couldn't you just keep your lights on? The Dakota has the auto headlight off on it, right (to keep the battery from draning)? Seems like a logical low-cost solution.

I used to have a Saturn...and would do that rather frequently (parking lights only). The DRLs are actually still running the high beams at reduced power, even when the parking lights are on. But, according to the Saturn manual for my old SL1, "reduced power" is only 50%...so it's still pretty bright.
That is a thought...to leave the lights on constantly...I wonder how big of a drain that would actually be on the battery?

Check this out, may work but I still say watch out for a bad CAN reaction. I haven't read up on any of these so I'm not sure of the terminations etc.

my truck has the light sensor on the dash... but I dont really want DRLs... I just switch my parking lights and fogs on.

I really wish we had DRLs....gets you a discount on insurance.

its not illegal to drive with your parking lights on, it is actually suggested that you do it in drivers training... It increases your visability to others on the road. running lights are also not illegal... I will dig up the links on MDOT...
