Default Turbo dakota thoughts?!?!

I know that it may seem a bit far fetched but has anyone tried to turbocharge a dakota. I know that these trucks are all pretty new but I would seriously consider turbocharging mine once the warranty runs out. I talked around to some turbo nuts and they all seem to think that you can safely run 6 psi on anything without doing any head work or anything. I think as long as you hooked up a tuning system like an SAFC or something like that and hook up monitor all of your gauges like an EGT gause, air fuel gauge and a boost gauge it would be fine. Also, you would have to add a knock sensor. My concerns would be is the tranny strong enough to take on another 100 horsepower and will the rears hold up?? I think you could fabricate your own rear mount turbo kit, splice the harness and do the plumbing and all relatively cheap. The turbo you could pick up cheap enough rebuilt off of a turbo car like a talon/eclipseor something. Just my 2 cents. First I want to get the jetchipII, lower t-stat, first but I thibk it is a doable project.

Well my only knowledge on turbo comes from researching it when I owned my integra so take the following as you will. If you are going to attempt this make sure you do a lot of research too. I saw many people just throw some parts together that sounded good and promptly grenade the engine. From everything I have read the most important thing with any turbo setup is the tune. Ideally you would want an unlocked PCM and tune it on a dyno with an experienced tuner. I have seen people reliably turbo integras with 3-5psi of boost on stock internals so if a 1.8L 4 cylinder can handle it I'm sure our engines can. It's all in the tune.

I agree, I had 2 turbo eclipses back in the day as well as working on dozens of them. I am familiar with the whole setup. The tune is the most important part. My buddy turbocharged his inline 6 jeep and had no probs (thus far). I have to find a good shop in the philly area that is very knowledgeable with tuning turbos.

I've looked into the remote turbo system by STS Turbos. They have a unigue system where you don't need the cooler for it since it runs from the rear end of the vehicle. The only problem at the time was the fuel mapping. They didn't have anything at the time i was looking into it.

I want to install a S/C though. From what I understand, you can get more out of them vs the turbo. I don't know whether it's true or not.

I dunno, extra wear and tear on an engine from tighter pullies, and needing to draw power to make power, doesn't sound as efficient as a turbo....

That's just me though.

You have less usable power loss to a turbo so with a large turbo you can make more power overall. Of course the larger the turbo the more lag you get usually. Superchargers, being run by pullys from the engine have no lag so you'll get immediate power off the line. That's my understanding of it, someone correct me if I'm grossly wrong here.

Default Turbo vs Super

I've had both, and it really depends on what you want...

If you want both low end torque and off the line performance, super's the way to go. You lose a lot though in fuel economy, and since you are starting with a V8 (I'm assuming anyway) you should have enough off-the line performance until a turbo spools up. The turbo is better high end where a truck V8 can lose it's breath and gets slightly better gas mileage (since it's usually in low/no boost on the highway). I don't know how durability compares... mine never blew up, but I didn't have them long either (C230 2.3SC and Jetta 1.8T),

My $0.02, on a truck V8 I'd go turbo.

The thing about a turbo is that you generate more heat under the hood though. You also have to add more space to get the inner-cooler in. That would be the only thing that would stop me from getting a turbo.... unless, like I said, if I get the remote turbo. It replaces the muffler and gives it a cool *** sound.

Here's the link: http://ststurbo.com/. Check out how it works. Maybe one of us can be the test subjects for the Daks.
