All season tires are fine for some snow conditions but are not nearly as good on the ice as a snow tire. I use Yokohamas on my dakota and it is like night and day for ice tractions vs. all seasons. Snow tires have a different tread rubber compound that keeps the softer in cold temps. The problem with a all terrain tire is that the rubber gets harder as it gets colder. THis makes the rubber slicker on the ice. Also a good snow tires has many more sipes in the tread which gives more biting edges for the ice. The downside of all these sipes is that they will chunk out more if driven in rocks and gravel. I see snow and ice at least 4 months per year so it is worth it to me to have true snow tires on every vehicle I have.
