can a black dakota plastic bumper be painted?
hey guys. Im new to this forum and have a question about my front and rear bumpers. They are made of black plastic and do not look right w/ the new rims that i bought. Can these bumpers be painted the same color as the rest of the truck, or will it end up chipping off shortly after. I took it to maako to see what they would do, but they couldnt guarentee anything. Thanks alot

Any competant body shop can paint them for you,There are many painted facias and trim pieces out there all painted to match body, Slightly diff process but it can/is done all the time.
I disagree, Cadillac. Respectfully, of course.
The ABS plastic bumpers are paintable and will last as long as the truck, if prepped properly (!!). A good body shop will probably use a plastic adhesion promoter, prime it with a good filling primer, and apply the topcoat with a flex agent in the paint/clear.
The flex agent doesn't work like a lot of people think though. It doesn't keep the paint flexible on the body part once it's dry. It only gives it flexibility until it cures. That's why if you see a newer car with ABS bumper covers that has been wrecked the paint is all cracked like an eggshell. Once it's dry it's as brittle as china.
So anyway, the moral of the story is that our ABS bumper covers CAN be painted to match the vehicle and WILL last if done properly. My recommendation would be to go to a local reputable body shop in your area (translated: not Maaco OR Earl Sheib) that has a paint booth and paints a good amount of newer cars that have to meet insurance company standards.
