Hey Guys, anyone have experience or input on these electronic rust prevention units out there. The dealer tried to sell me one and I live in a city where they dump an inch of salt on the road everytime it snows. If they work? I think they might be worth every penny.

Sounds like a good Mythbusters submission topic.
I believe the reason we use negative ground on cars is because it provides a VERY slight deterent to corrosion and I know that some ships use a system that lets a small piece of metal get corroded to help protect the rest of the ship (do a search for sacrificial anode), but I doubt they would be of any real help in air (air is a REALLY good insulator.)
So, I suspect it is possible that they might give a tiny boost, but really doubt it would make a big enough difference to be worth purchasing one. If they do provide a significant level of protection, I would be interested in learning how it works.

As far as I know, my father was talked into the same deal years ago with his ram, and he didn't really have any significant signs of prevented rusting. The truck still began rusting under the doors. Its more of a gimmick, than anything. Like Growlor said it made be a tiny boost that one wouldnt notice. I would save your money and use a trusty old water hose, bucket, and some car soap, and wash'r down!

 

i have seen undercoatings put on trucks to prevent rust that my dad says he has done and it has worked well, usually places that sell bedliners will do it, for some reason he passed on it on his truck, but now wishes he had done it id look into that instead of this dealer gimmick if your worried about rusting

 

yeah I was thinkin along the same lines, like using a rust prevention spray paint under neath your truck, or what he said above...nothing beats a solid non-rust surface between the frame of the truck and the salt.
