Greetings!
HI, everyone. I am a 61 year old disabled retired peace officer. We just bought a 2006 dakota SLR extended cab, V-6 engine. About 85% of my cars have been Chrysler products, and this dakota is sweeeeet! We only have one small problem and it is driving us nuts. When the security system is armed, and we return to the truck, we press the unlock button on the remote. Instead of unlocking the doors, it siren and horn start sounding and the lights flash. At first it was just annoying, but last night we were in Casa Grande, AZ, and the cops here are death on alarms. What can we do to make the system work correctly?

Well, from what a few have experienced with the factory alarm... It has been a dealer issue with programming or bad units.
Your issue sounds more like a programming issue than a broken part though. I would take it in and explain what is going on.
If all else fails, you could have it disabled and go aftermarket. Depending on cost of labor and if you are under warranty still, it might be cheaper to go that way.

Starlord, I'm new to the forum too. Because you mentiond "a siren and horn" it soundslike maybe you have an aftermarket alarm. Lots of information in this forum, I'll bet you'll find the solution here. Good Luck..
HI, everyone, and thanks for the helping words. I put a new battery in the fob, and am a bit puzzled. the manual says two CR2032 batteries are required. My wife and I finally decided that was for the two fobs originally sent with the vehicle, as the fob only took one battery. I gave the contacts a gentle cleaning and examined the rubber membrane, and when I put it back together, the fob works. I have an appointment with the local Dodge dealer next Monday. I wondered about the alarm, and now, from what you said, I may have a Viper. When the alarm is set or disarmed, I get an electronic chirp and the horn beeps. When the alarm goes off, it sounds like the Viper alarm, as it cycles through several siren sounds, while the horn beeps again and again and the lights flash.
Thank you, Dusty. I feel like such an idiot. In all the excitement, I was calling it an SLR, but that is a camera, isn't it? LOL
We love our Dakota, an extended cab, candy apple red gorgeous vehicle. We got a great deal when we bought it, and the next day, the salesperson came to our house with a new contract. They had taken me through another lending institution and got a lower payment. Never had that happen before. I feel very comfortable here, and again, thank you for helping out.
