Default engine light code P0420

The engine light is back on again and now it is staying on. The code reader says Catalyst Efficency Below Threshold Bank 1. Could anyone please tell me what this means? Catalytic converter? O2 sensors? Does anyone else see this code constantly flash up on their Dakota?

Thanks

this code usually comes up when there is something wrong with one of the cats, is usually more common on gm vehicles, not a big deal...take it to the dealer and let them deal with it.

That is a Converter code.

Common on Dodge's brother.I have done tons of them at my shop.

If you have a tester you can actually test it yourself.Have someone run it at about 2500 rpm at idle and test thew temp's at the front of the cat and then at the rear. The rear should be about 30% hotter. If it's reading hotter at the front, the cat's clogged.

Oh yeah, and have the o2 sensors checked as well.Sometimes a faulty O2 will kick a cat efficiency code.

Thanks everyone!
I appreciate all the responses! I called and made an appointment with the dealer...hopefully the warranty will cover it. I just like having an idea of what's going on before the dealer starts working on anything. I'm kind of leaning to the catalytic converter/O2 sensors. It's not the gas lid...I checked! But I will also keep the EGR in mind while talking with the mechanic. The appointment is on June 5...I'll let you know what I find out.

Thanks again!
