Hypermilage Attempt
I have been hypermiling with my Jeep Patriot 4x4. My mileage has gone up. I am at 23.4mpg in all stop and go driving. I start out slow and drive the speed limit. I coast down hills and put it in neutral at long redlights. I also keep the rpms under 2000.I tried doing some of this when I had my dakota but with all the mods it was hard. I loved the way the truck ran especially after adding the fastman throttlebody. The biggest problem is all the morons on the road. With gas at over 4 bucks a gallon people still insist on driving like maniacs. I get the finger all the time. I don't care they are not paying for my gas so screw them.

[sm=gears.gif][sm=grinangel.gif]I am trying to slow down a little but honestly 15mpg and boring vs 13mpg and fun I'm thinking I might go back to the fun driving

Where I live gas is now around 5US a gallon and has been over 4 for most of this year.
Thus I have been making a lot of attempts to improve the fuel economy.
I usually just stick to 100km/h on the highway with cruise control, that seems to be around 23-25mpg
Wind affects it greatly, the other day i had 25 going one way then an hour later the return trip i only had 17. Drafting behind trucks does help with this but of course you cant get too close.
In town i try to let off the gas when approaching lights instead of keeping the same speed and braking and lightly accelerating helps. Also if you are stopped for more than lets say 10-15 seconds I turn off the engine. But you dont save that much, the truck uses 1.3 L per hour idling (about .25 gallons i guess)
One thing you should pick up if you want to really know what the truck is up to is a scan guage, you can get them online and is an indespensible tool. Not only can you see your instaneous economy but things like current horsepower, engine load, etc. it will show you what kills economy and helps it much easier than attempting to use that overhead console. I would recommend getting one (it also reads your engine codes to boot)
I found gunning it at lights is horrible for fuel, it shoots up to 20l/1000k (around 10mpg)
PS I find it humourous that the US is up in arms over 4 Dollar gas, we have had to suffer with prices that is always at least 1$ US a gallon higher than in the states, check out the link. But i fully understand why you would be upset as the US had such cheap gas not that long ago

Latest tank - 439.9 miles on 18.1 gallons for a tank average of 24.3 MPG. Probably 85% highway miles.
Making an active effort this tank to keep the throttle as far open as possible while under 1800 RPM or so. If terrain and traffic permits, this means 5th gear at 35 MPH and 6th gear by 40 or 45. Helps minimize pumping losses through the intake. Also trying to time lights in city driving to never come to a complete stop; not sure how much benefit this gives, but it saves brakes, prevents idling, and reduces the amount of time I spend accelerating and burning extra fuel.
Still crusing on the highway between 55 and about 62. I've noticed alot more people doing the same. Gonna shoot for 25 MPG again.
