Default Installing Trans Cooler.

Decided to install an additional external transmission cooler (B&M) on the 05 and figured I might just as well give it the works with a filter and fluid change. The mileage is 26K.

Drilled and painted my home brew mounting bracket. Went on to drop the fluid and take a bath in ATF while removing the pan. BTW, there will be a drain plug installed before re-aasembly!

There's the typical pan filter attached with one bolt but what's this? An additional screw on filter in the transmission?

This filter didn't come with my service kit. I would imagine a dealer item. Anyone know much about this? Is it (full flow) or (By-Pass)? I definitely want to change it.

Yup, 2 filters, a flat pan filter (make sure you get the correct one for 2 or 4wd and replace the grommet/gasket) and a spinon return filter. Dealer or Napa has them, Checker and such useally have to order them.

Thanks. NAPA had the filter. I'm assuming they put the spin on filter in the case due to the different applications of this transmission and to avoid engineers having to locate along the frame etc on different vehicles. One size fits all when it is internal.

Ended up locating the cooler on top of the support in front of the radiator/ condensor on an angle iron bracket. Plenty of room. Not sure how to host a picture from Photo Bucket.

A pan drain plug is installed as well. Used Loctite-518 (Anaerobic Sealer) on the gasket and threads. No leaks! This will avoid one heck of a mess on the next service.

The new filter kit came with a rubber gasket as well instead of the silicone used at the assembly plant.

Used the (Hill-Billy) method to flush the system. About seven quart came out with the pan and filter removed. Let drip all night. After installing the new filter/pan I refilled with seven quart.

Unhooked the cooler line where it returns back to the transmission and started. Let a couple of quart flow into the drip pan and shut down the engine. Replenished a couple of quart and repeated. After the third time I reconnected the line and topped it off. Most of the old fluid should be purged.

Didn't use the transmission hose provided with the cooler either. Used Summit Twist-Tite hose. Should be good for a while.

looks good, how and where did you tie into the cooler lines? Pic would be nice.

Your Hill-Billy method is the best way to do a complete flud change!

next time throw in a Transgo 545RFE -HD2 shiftkit.

A little info on the added cooler. The truck came in today on about six mile journey with ambient temperatue around 62F.

Temperature at the radiator inlet cooler: 133F

Temperature at the radiator outlet cooler: 120F

Temperature at the added External Cooler inlet: 119F

Temperature at the added External Cooler outlet: 108F

I would like to add this test is far from scientific and numbers would likely vary but the added cooler does allot of good no doubt.
