Is winter gas really a different blend? What do they do? I assume diesel gets additives to prevent cold weather gelling, but does the same go for gasoline?

 

Yeah there is, winter blend gas is just dirtier than summer blends, which is just less refining. The oil refineries can do this because hotter temperatures tend to make the "dirty" pollutants evaporate into the air and the colder temperatures wont. This is why the refineries get away with changing the blends on some of us. Hence, your vehicles run dirtier in the winter... producing less mpgs... Muy intresante. So if I read that right, "reformulated gas" is not "dirty gas". I see that New York requires it, hopefully I can continue to put the good stuff in my truck.

Here in Sothern California, I don't think we are getting winter blend or summer blend. The emissions laws out here make it such that most fuel is known as EC Unleaded, EC Unleaded Plus, etc. (EC = emissions controlled).

Either way, I can tell you that my MPG has dropped since leaving NJ because of the fuel here (from an average of 16.7 to 15.2). Not much, but enough.

But to be honest though, with the cost of a barrell of oil dropping to $51, I am not complaining. I paid $1.81 yesterday and for 87 here in SoCal. For San Diego, that is an awesome price.

 

must be nice 8.99 a gal of the good 114 octane at the track

 

fill up entire tank with 93 for the trip down try and use up as much before getting to a 1/4 tank than put as much 114 octane in until about a 1/2 tank. race all day about 5 to 7 runs depending on the turn out of people. then on the way home filler up with 93 again.
