I believe that Directed electronics holds the world record now... (or claims to be able to break it) I am not sure if it was an official metering or not, but they claimed to put down a 180.9db in car audio mag.
I think they were Orion Subs... but not 100% sure I will look for that magazine.

I've got a JVC Arsenal KD-AHD59 on order. If you live in an area that is broadcasting HD audio, it is a freaking bargain at $180. Built in HD Tuner, front aux input, front usb port, and dual pre-outs with sub control. I've got a buddy who does broadcast engineering for one of the local FM conglomerates, and it's the one he recommends for under $300. He has a nice system with the JVC head unit, and all polk speakers, subs and amps. Sounds great in his vehicle. I've not been a big JVC fan until I heard his.

JVC's arsenal line is nice. (depending on how far back you go) a few years ago, they had head units that were based off Nak designs... like a nakamichi with a pretty face.
Now days, they are hit or miss. I am trying to think of the model you are talking about... but I want to say that most, if not all of their HD H/Us are nice...
I am an Alpine man myself. I used to rock Eclipse, but the Alpine passive 7995 back from like 2000 converted me... I was hitting high 130's db (between 138.5-139.0db) on an eclipse head unit. The Alpine Rep that came to our shop "loaned me" that alpine, and I broke 141db... ever since then, I have been an alpine guy.
Man, those were some good time... lol
