Exclamation Pinging with Superchips in 87 tune???

This happened twice today and both times going up a hill. I seriously thought there was a diesel behind me, but no...it was me. It was clattering like a diesel. I have the 87 Octane tune, with the following mods...

REV limiter +190 from stock
WOT 1-2: 5910 rpm
WOT 2-3: 5610 rpm
Speed Limiter: 120 mph

This should be a good tune. The manual says if you here pinging, revert back to stock or add higher octane fuel. If that is the case than why the F@*! is there an 87 tune?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Sounds like pre-detonation to me. You have made your tune more aggressive and there's generally two ways to handle it. 1-2 range colder spark plugs or higher octane gas. If you use higher octane gas then bump up to the 91 performance tune.

You get a bad tank of gas? My truck did this after filling up at a Sunoco. A bottle of octane booster fixed it, filled up at another station and never had the problem since.

Yeah coulda well been the gas you might have gotten...sometimes you just get a bad tank...try some octane booster for now like pyro said and try another station once you empty out...

i havent had any pinging on the 87 tune with all limits set to max and ive had the tune on for about 2 months now...good luck man

Yeah, I will get some octane boost tomorrow after work. And then see what happens.

Eric, I wish I could run 93. But gas here is still over $3.00. Most of the country is 30-50 cents less than we are. So, I will go to 89 and see what happens. If I have to go to 91, then I will change the tune to 91.

Ghost, I hope higher octane fixes it for you. Here's some info for you.

I haven't used the 87 tune but one time, a few years ago, I know I have a different engine, used it one time on a 360 mile trip, where I figured I'd run 87 in it just to burn up on the interstates and switch back to 93 and the performance tune to play when I got there.

I did notice a slight ping when accelerating to pass, and actually got WORSE gas mileage then with the performance tune and 93 octane. Incidentally, I ran a good half tank of 93 before switching the tune back to performance and DID NOT have any noticeable pre-detonation. So I would tend to agree it's simply a gas issue...

Hopefully the higher octane gas fixes it. Here is the definition of engine ping and what causes engine ping.

Engine ping is a metallic noise which is called Detonation/Pre-ignition which has several root causes: a lack of octane in fuels, hot cylinder temperatures (particles in cylinders will fire fuel mixture prematurely. usually controlled with E.G.R.(exhaust gas recirculation) or timing retardation by electronic means.
