Default Dakota Fan Clutch

I am having issues with my truck over heating and I am trying to fix the problem without have to replace everything. I first replace the thermostat just because that is something cheap and simple. Did not fix the issue. My question is: Do the fan clutch suppose to speed up with the motor. Mine is stay at about the same speed from what I can tell. My truck runs at an ok temp while I am drive but that is because of the air flow. The truck also does not go to full hot when the truck is running and parked with the a/c off. Any assistance would be awesome so that I do not go and buy everything.

Thanks

John

our trucks use a viscous type clutch. when the engine is hot the fan will lock and run at the same speed as your engine and will make a loud fan noise like a semi truck. thats normal. when the engine cools down the clutch will start to slip and spin with the engine but not at full speed. if its slipping all the time than your clutch is going out.

Correct me if I'm understanding this wrong, the truck is fine while driving, it's also fine when it's sitting there idling with no a/c. Does it only overheat if idling with the a/c on or are there other circumstances in which it's overheating?

I don't think you have the thermostat in backwards, you wouldn't be able to drive very far without overheating if you did.

I beg to differ with you. My truck was running very warm but never overheated after I changed out my thermostat. It ran that way for about 6 months but, it didn't concern me until we got some pretty hot days this summer. Last week I decided to pull the 'stat. Yup... when I installed the 180 'stat I put it in backwards. I went and bought the NAPA 'stat just to be safe and it's fine now.
