Cheap re-program for 545RFE auto transmission
I read somewhere on here about using a resistor. One of the forum members sent me the instructions for the Transgo transmission shift kit, which has the instructions but not the transistor value. I did a little more reading and found that it's supposed to be a 2.2 K-ohm resistor. I installed it the other day and it does raise the shift points. I really hated the way the auto would shift from 1-2 OK but then would go 3-4-5 in quick succession, putting me in overdrive at 35-40mph and stall unless I gave it a little more gas after each shift to delay the next shift.
With the resistor and my normal driving, it shifts from 1-2 at around 2500rpm and 2-3 around 3000rpm. If you keep your foot in it, it will stay in 3rd until waaaay over the speed limit ;-)
What I've figured out is to lift off the pedal momentarily when I reach cruising speed and it'll shift into OD and life goes on as normal after that.
If you want to try it, it's really simple.
1. Go to Radio Shack and buy a pack of 2.2k-ohm resistors for <$5
2. Crawl under your truck with a 5/8" (16mm) socket and remove the heat shield over the plug at the right-rear of the transmission.
3. On the plug, pull back the little red U-shaped piece and push the release button to pull the harness off the plug.
4. The harness has three wires in an L arrangment like this :. Hook the resistor between the two vertical wires like this <:. Then tape it up and replace the heat shield.
5. Take it for a ride and decide for yourself.
