As long as the Ram+trailer are within your trucks' tow rating you should be fine. I had the same thought about turning the truck around.

Also keep in mind stopping; if you don't have an electronic brake controller and good trailer brakes you could have a pretty unsafe situation.

Too much tongue wieght is bad and decreases break performance, too little and the trailer will sway.

It will be a cross country trip. How can I decrease the tongue weight besides backing the Ram onto the trailer?

Putting the RAM on backwards might work to set that load right. If you have too much tongue weight, you could invest a few hundred $$ in a WD hitch. That should help distribute the weight better so you can steer the truck. Make sure you do have the brakes on the trailer though (anything over 5k lbs should have electronic brakes);some smaller trailers will have surge brakes which are okay but require more braking force to engage.

if it's cross country, you want to make sure its right!

are you taking a U-haul truck or something along those lines? You may want to tag it behind that!
