Default Tailgate strenght

HELP!!!

I purchased a Polaris ATV yesterday. I was in the car so I couldn't haul it home. No problem. The dealer took it to my house. This afternoon I went and bought some ramps to load it with. I thought I could disconnect the tailgate cables to drop the tailgate out of the way, (I don't want to take the tailgate off all the way) and place the lip of the ramp on the truck bed itself. Alas, it doesn't drop down far enough to do what I wanted. I guess I could probably go ahead and put the ramps on the edge of the of the tailgate, ( Cables connected of course). So...My big question is, will our Dak tailgate cables support the weight of loading an ATV?? The ATV weighs about 575 lbs. plus my weight of 190 lbs. Any thoughts???

I did that with a (john deere type) riding mower with no prob at all and I was standing on the tailgate to help load it.

It will be fine. Be more worried about the back window than the tailgate cables .

Yes it will hold you and a 4-wheeler. Don't try the same thing in your buddy's Tacoma though, it will crumple. It is pretty easy to drop all the way off the truck, but I know you said you didn't want to do that.

And tdister is correct about the back window, I found out the hard way on my last truck.

I also have a 700lb Atv, rear tires sit on the tailgate when loaded, no problems with the weight, just make sure its strapped down good and can't roll, last thing you want it to have that machine come out the back or hit the rear window, (I've also had a broken window due to my quad and a cross ditch I hit to fast)

I built a wooden box in the front of my truck box to keep the quad tires from lettig the machine come forward anymore than I wanted, nothing fancy but it sure works great, I recommend just in case you pull into the box to fast and the rear window says hi to the bumper on the quad.

Cheers.

We've used ramps on the tailgate for wheelers and snowmobiles for years on various trucks. I say good to go, as others have stated watch out for that back window and make sure it's strapped down good and tight, you don't want it moving forwards and KO'ing the rear window on a nasty bump!

you will not have a problem with the tailgate and the Polaris.

Thanks guys. I'll see what I can rig up to protect the rear window.
