Default CEL but no code displayed

Hey everyone...

to make a long story short CEL came on while driving home today (engine still runnin' like a top). I did the "key shuffle" when I pulled in the driveway but no codes were displayed (just the -done-).

Any thoughts what might be causing this? Haven't gotten around to buying a scanner yet but maybe it's time to spring for one.

Also, I haven't filled up for gas in about a week (used a quarter tank so far) so I doubt it's the gas cap and I'm sittin' at 16500 km (just a shade over 10000 miles).

Thanks for the opinions/thoughts.

by a scanner pays out in the long run so much, im thinking about charging my friends 5 bucks a scan... still beats going to a shop and spending 100 and sumthing

Most automotive stores will check trouble codes for you (free). Got to Advance or Autozone.

That being said I enjoy having the scanner for all of our Dodge trucks in the family.

If you disconnect your negative battery terminal for about an hour and bolt it back up, it will reset your PCM. Sometimes its all it takes. Like everyone else said, buy a tuner so you can trouble shoot your codes every time you pop the CEL.

Thanks boys. Looks like it ended up being more of a scanner/tuner thread but it's all good. Looks like I'll pick up a scanner/tuner (I want to see what the code was before clearing it with the battery trick).

Thanks again everyone!

You do know you can disconnect the negative and positive and just touch them together and it will reset the PCM almost instantly and wont cause any harm to anything. Just much faster than waiting an hour for the charge to dissipate.

UPDATE **************************

Although nothin' was showing on the dash after the key shuffle it turns out it was throwing a P013C code. In this case the second O2 sensor was slow to respond. As per TSB 18-026-07 the PCM was reflashed and the truck is back to normal. Thanks again for all of the quick responses.
