You can touch it right to the Neg. on the battery if you like.

Any way you do it, just ground it for 30 seconds+ AFTER you disconnect it from the battery.

hendrixx324, where did you get the red bumper and grill on your Dakota? They're not stock, are they?

Default The truest code reset....

That is the best Advice that I have seen to date on any forum... Great job... I registered just to tell you that... As I thought it was the same common sense procedure that I have performed with other vehicles so I googled and Here I am saying thanks for allowing me to see that I was correct in what I was about to do... Thanks from your not so average shade-tree mech.

Disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery,
ground the cable end for 30 seconds,
reconnect,
turn key to ON position,
wait for fuel pump to stop pumping,
start truck.

This is the ONLY way to completely clear the ECU. Any other way does not discharge the capacitors in it. Dealers do it this way, atleast the Techs that know about it. They won't tell you though, I will and did, as I am no longer a Tech.

Does this really help after a spark plug change? How can you tell if the ECU has reset? Thanks in advance.

Dont know if it will help anything after just changing spark plugs. Disconnecting the battery resets the PCM, i.e. it "erases" everything it has "learned" about your driving habits, sensor age, etc. You may or may not notice any driveability changes. All depends.
