stereo 12v power source. where? how?
I think you guys are on to something. I have just been using the red wire out of the harness to grab what I believe to be switched power from the cig light. BUT I do not have a 12V constant hookup; I think I need both from what I am hearing. So, I have all the speakers hooked up with the harness red going to the cig lighter. I think I need to hook the yellow wire radio wire into a 12V source.
This leaves me with two questions; look at the pic i snapped. If I have red from harness out to cig lighter, what do i do with the yellows. One yellow comes from the harness (to 12v battery maybe)...the other from the radio - what do I do with this yellow battery wire if the yellow from the harness it out grabbing power from the battery? Had yellow from harness hooked to yellow from radio with red from harness/axxess box to cig lighter, now understanding this is wrong.
Thanks again fellas

Eric - see the picture of the unit; it is the Metra Axxess 6502 interface. I am thinking my constant to the battery is the issue here...ie no hooked up at all. Now if I can only know a simple way to run this wire to my battery and the correct place to hook it up to, I will hopefully be on my way..

My yellow was hot from the factory... so it worked like a charm.
Looking at that set up, I would un-hook the remote wire. (blue) unless you have an amp that needs to be turned on. (premium sound)
An easy way to test if your yellow from the harness is getting power is a volt meter. (or a test light, but that wont tell you if your getting enough power)
as a test to see if the radio does work, you can jump the red and yellow together... when you turn the key on, it should power up the radio. that would eliminate that as a possibility. To jump them, just use a chunk of wire with a 10 amp fuse in the middle...

We have liftoff! I feel like tim bleepin allen from tool time - the guy that creates hazards and blows things up but gets the job done. the stereo is hooked up and working beautifully. Hit the battery (like you told me), hit the cig light with red switched (like you told me) and success! Just need to make the perm battery connection through the dash, assemble and done...wait...my Alpine 6.5s are going in next. Maybe tonight! Then this thing will thump. Many thanks to all and will post up pics ASAP. Gotta think about the next project - maybe performance to pep up the 4.7L. Pete
Pete,
I am planning on installing a JVC head into an 2005 dakota quad cab with basic (not premium) factory sound. I purchased the Axxess harness; it looks like the same one you have.
However, I am having trouble following your last post; can you let me know if I am following your install correctly?
1. connect grounds.
2. connect 8 speaker wires together (greens, grays, purples and whites).
3. connect red from axxess box to cig. lighter.
4. connect orange stripe from axxess box to red on jvc harness.
5. connect yellows
6. connect orange from axxess to orange stripe on jvc. (is this the dimmer?)
7. do not connect blue wires.
You said in your last post that you ran the yellow to the battery. which yellow was that, from the axxess harness or the jvc? what did you do with the other yellow?
Thanks,
Bill

Yep, I have worked on a few dakotas, and every one had a hot yellow. the red is the issue.
Connect the speakers (greens, purples, grays and whites)
Connect blacks
Connect yellows
I never connect dimmers (oranges). I have replaced more head units because the dimmer fries a capacitor on a PCB because of those darn things.
Then you need to source a power source for the red. A lot of guys go to the cig lighter/power outlet. I went to the ignition column.

Thanks, but i'm still not sure of what exactly I should be doing so I attached a photo, hopefully this helps.
I made all my speaker connections, yellow and black.
Which red should go to the power source, (A) to/from the JVC head or (B) from the Axxess adapter? (A and B are labeled in the photo)
Also, I understand why I don't want to get involved with the dimmer, but what's the deal with the extra orange coming out of the harness that comes from the dodge? (D in the photo)
Thanks,
Bill
