Red face Heat shield or no heat shield?

Does it make a diff. if you have a heat shield around you cai filter in the 3rd gen dakota? I have seen pics of it done both ways. Has anyone tested this with it on and then off to see if there was a performance differance? If you made your own (heat shield) what materials did you use? Before I get jumped on, yes, I did do a search on this.

I just installed my K&N CAI, and what i liked about it is that if I decide to spray wash the engine compartment it will help keep the moisture away from it. I was worried a little about water getting into the filter, but the heat shield should help block.

Eric,(first do you have 3.7L or 4.7L) is your cai DIY, or did you install a K&N? I would like to know, without taking it apart if the plenum is actually 3.25 OD (KN install instructions for 05, 06 says the connector from plenum to air tube is 3.25 ID) Thanks in advance, planning on doing the mod this coming week.

Default CAI is in!

I have the CAI installed! (right now its a WAI) I still need to finish the heat shield. Its a little harder than I thought it would be with all the contours under the hood. I have it all fabbed up and bent, now I need to paint it, and mount it. Sounds like a large vacuum with the hood open! LOL

Default WOW, Now That's A Plumbing Job!!!!!!!

I have been kicking around some sort of CAI also. I just replaced the original filter with a K&N filter.

There's is a Chevrolet Engine (excuse the language) that just has a K&N Filter attached right to the intake manifold and sets DIRECTLY in front of the radiator fan. I think it's on some of the Corvette's.

So that kind of makes me wonder about the importance about COLD Air versus just a LOT of air into the intake.

I was thinking about just going Straight Filter right into the intake without all that plumbing.

Has anybody tried this?

Cold air can hold more oxygen than hot air. Thats why everyone goes for a cold air intake, and not just one that will allow alot of air flow.
